Tentative game plan

Off the top of my head.

I think we’ll run new wiring from the breaker box in the basement up to the third floor. Then install a few pull string lights from the rafters and get them on their own circuit. Once we have new lighting, cut the breakers to the old knob and tube and completely get rid of all that.

From there we can add a new circuit with grounded outlets and switched lights. We’ll still use the pull-string lights until the new ceiling is in place with the switched lights.

That’s when things really get interesting.
Install gable end vents with thermostatically switched fan (and possibly soffit vents)
Insulate
Hang ceiling
Pull up floor boards
Drop wiring to second floor office (and possibly the other two bedrooms)
Install sub-floor (leveled, but not sure game plan for that)
Re-install the repaired flooring
Paint walls and ceiling
Finish floor

Continued demo

Last night we filled up the bed of my truck with drywall to take to the landfill. After a half a dozen trips up and down the stairs with a #50 garbage can of waste really wiped me out. I’m a total wimp. We’ll have another truck load after this. Also we’ve torn down and bagged ¼ of the insulation.

This is a no no

Water stain?

Underside of the roof

Things seem to look ok up here. A little residue from water
infiltration spotted in one spot. So far

Taking a look at the existing insulation

It is about an inch thick. I think we'll remove it.

Intro

Hi,
My wife, Sarah, and I decided to gut and re-do the interior of third floor of our 1908 Erie PA house. Most of the blog entries will be from my iPhone so they will have little text commentary for the pics.

enjoy! your comments are welcome.
